Many people thought David and Rita Trafford were crazy when they decided to set up Sijnn Wines out in Malgas in the early 2000s, but luckily they believed in their idea!

Climate change was anticipated by selecting grape varieties that can handle hot and dry climates with limited water availability. The rocky soil, reminiscent of Chateauneuf du Pape, and limited water availability result in relatively low volumes at harvest but with all the better quality. In 2014, talented winemaker Charla Bosman joined the team and is still at the helm, and she has gone from strength to strength.

The key words at Sijnn are natural farming and winemaking. At Sijnn, everything is done by hand, from the picking of the grapes, to the press, the label on the bottle, etc. They are a small team where everyone is involved in all aspects of wine production. The awards for Sijnn wines have not been long in coming. Malgas may be the newest of the appellations in South Africa but we dare say it is probably one of the most exciting and we look forward to following their journey forward.
